Air Zimbabwe Fleet

The initial fleet of the Boeing 720 aircrafts used by The Air Rhodesia were replaced by five of the Boeing 707's purchased from Lufthansa. These 707's were put into the Vickers Viscount fleet, with the purchase of two Viscounts from the UK operator Dan Air added to it. In the middle of 1980's, to enhance regional routes, three more Boeing 737 aircrafts were ordered from Boeing by Auir Zimbabwe. The long haul operations were the Boeing 707's domain in the begining but were gradually taken out and replaced with two Boeing 767 aircrafts within the early and mid 1990's. from the air force in the 1980's, a BAe 146 (British Aerospace) was added to the Air Zimbabwe fleet. Proveing unsuitable towards the hot and high conditions in Zimbabwe, Fokker 50's were returned to the lessor which were leased and used from 1995. Also the BAe 146 was grounded. The airline leased two MA-60 (turboprops) from China in 2005, supplemented by a third donated example in 2006 for domestic and short regional route operations. In 2006, It was announced that the government has ordered 5 Ilyushin Il-96 aircrafts, in which 2 were passenger and 3 were the freight versions, to replace the old 767's from Russia. but unfortunatly the order was cancelled.
